Christopher Gibson is a Northern Michigan musician, songwriter, producer, and recording artist whose apparent refusal to remain inside a single genre has become everyone else’s problem.

His music moves through alternative, electronic, indie, hip-hop, rock, experimental production, cinematic sound design, and whatever other sonic territory proves useful in the moment. Gibson approaches songs less like fixed genres and more like raw material: something to dismantle, distort, rebuild, reverse, layer, automate, resample, and occasionally drag through the philosophical underworld before allowing it to become a finished record.

The results are deeply personal, aggressively imaginative, and difficult to file neatly onto a shelf.

As a songwriter, Christopher Gibson gravitates toward transformation, addiction, identity, obsession, death, rebirth, mysticism, isolation, and the uncomfortable machinery operating underneath ordinary human behavior. His work frequently draws from alchemy, Hermeticism, mythology, psychology, religious symbolism, and the ancient human tradition of staring directly into the abyss and deciding it would probably make a pretty good concept album.

He writes, records, produces, arranges, and engineers his own music, treating the studio as both instrument and laboratory.

Vocals are stretched, degraded, layered, pitched, filtered, doubled, crushed, whispered, shouted, and occasionally subjected to processes that would concern a more responsible audio engineer. Acoustic instruments collide with synthesizers. Beautiful melodies are permitted to coexist with ugly sounds. Moments of intimacy can suddenly open into enormous cinematic arrangements or collapse into something strange, small, and unsettling.

This is intentional.

Gibson’s music is built around contrast: order and chaos, humor and grief, beauty and abrasion, the sacred and the profane, the person you were and whatever crawls out after that person has been burned away.

His ongoing work draws especially heavily from the language of alchemy—not simply as medieval occult imagery, but as a metaphor for psychological transformation. Putrefaction, purification, dissolution, conjunction, fermentation, distillation, and rebirth become narrative devices for examining the much less elegant realities of addiction, recovery, obsession, creativity, self-destruction, and change.

Where many musicians make albums, Christopher Gibson occasionally appears determined to construct elaborate symbolic systems and then hide songs inside them.

This behavior has thus far gone unpunished.

His broader background as a filmmaker, photographer, visual artist, and storyteller also shapes the music. Songs are conceived visually. Albums develop worlds. Titles, artwork, symbols, lyrics, sound design, and sequencing become parts of the same larger object rather than separate pieces of promotional material attached afterward.

For Gibson, music is not an accessory to the artwork.

The music is the artwork.

And while scholars may someday waste valuable grant funding attempting to determine whether Christopher Gibson should properly be classified as a singer-songwriter, producer, experimental musician, alternative artist, composer, or troublesome practitioner of sonic alchemy, listeners need only concern themselves with a simpler question:
